From Boho-Chic to Scandinavian Minimalism: Styles That Perfectly Complement White Washed Floors

What are white washed floors?

White washed floors refer to a type of flooring finish where a thin, white layer of paint or a diluted white stain is applied over the surface of the wood flooring. This technique is often used to achieve a beachy or rustic look in a home or other interior space. In some cases a thicker layer paint are applied and just depends on the final look that you want to achieve.

The process of whitewashing floors involves applying a white-colored coating to the wood, which allows the natural wood grain to show through while also providing a light and bright appearance to the flooring. The technique can be applied to different types of wood flooring, including solid hardwood, engineered wood, and even laminate flooring.

White washed floors have become popular in recent years as a way to add a touch of coastal or shabby chic style to a room, and can be a good option for homeowners who want to update their floors without completely replacing them.

What interior styles are better for white wash timber flooring White wash timber flooring is a versatile and light-toned flooring option that can complement a variety of interior styles, including:

Coastal:

White washed floors work well with coastal homes because they evoke a feeling of the beach and the ocean. The light and airy look of white washed floors can create a sense of openness and relaxation that is reminiscent of the seaside.

Coastal homes are often decorated in light, bright colors that reflect the natural beauty of the beach, and white washed floors complement this style perfectly. The combination of white washed floors with blue and green accents, seashell decor, and other beachy elements creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

In addition, white washed floors can help to reflect natural light, which is often abundant in coastal areas. This can make rooms appear larger and more spacious, which is particularly important in smaller beach homes.

Farmhouse: This style combines contemporary elements with traditional farmhouse elements, like reclaimed wood. White wash timber flooring can complement a farmhouse-style space, especially when paired with shiplap walls and rustic furniture pieces.

White washed floors work well with farmhouse style homes because they add to the rustic and aged aesthetic that is characteristic of this design style. Farmhouse style homes are known for their simplicity, functionality, and use of natural materials, and white washed floors help to enhance these elements. White washed floors are often used in farmhouse style homes because they give a sense of history and age to a space. The light, worn-in look of white washed floors can make a room feel cozy and inviting, and can be a good match for the distressed and weathered look that is often seen in farmhouse decor. Additionally, white washed floors can be paired with other elements commonly found in farmhouse style homes, such as reclaimed wood, shiplap walls, and vintage accessories. The combination of these elements creates a cohesive and charming space that is both comfortable and visually appealing. In summary, white washed floors work well with farmhouse style homes because they add to the overall aesthetic of the space and complement the natural materials and vintage elements that are often used in this design style.

White-washed floors can work well with boho-chic style homes for several reasons:

Neutral base: White-washed floors provide a neutral base that can complement the colorful and eclectic nature of boho-chic style. They allow other design elements, such as vibrant textiles and plants, to stand out and create a visually interesting space.

Overall, white-washed floors can enhance the boho-chic style by providing a neutral and natural foundation that allows for creativity and visual interest through other design elements. One of my favourite stylists and photographers are Paulina Arcklin and she always use settings with white washed or white painted flooring.

Scandinavian: White-washed floors are a popular feature of Scandinavian-style homes for several reasons:

Light and airy feel: Scandinavian design emphasizes light, bright spaces with a minimalistic aesthetic. White-washed floors reflect light and create an illusion of space, making rooms feel larger and more open.

Natural and rustic look: White-washing brings out the natural texture and grain of the wood, giving floors a rustic, weathered look that complements the natural materials and textures commonly found in Scandinavian design.

Easy to maintain: White-washed floors are easy to clean and maintain, which is important in a design style that emphasizes simplicity and functionality.

Neutral backdrop: White-washed floors provide a neutral backdrop for other design elements to shine. In a style that often features bold pops of color and pattern, white-washed floors provide a calming, neutral foundation.

Overall, white-washed floors are a versatile and timeless design element that can enhance the aesthetic of a Scandinavian-style home by providing a light, natural, and easy-to-maintain foundation for other design elements to build upon.

Ultimately, the style that works best for white wash timber flooring will depend on personal preference and the existing elements in the space. The light, airy feel of the white wash can help to create a bright and open atmosphere, making it a popular choice for many different interior styles.
